Bombik

Bombik was a volunteer art space in a bomb shelter in Kryvyi Rih. A group of volunteers put on plays, concerts and poetry evenings there and collected donations for the Ukrainian army. The space is closed now, so the website keeps its story: what happened there, who made it happen and what it achieved.

What’s on the site

The home page tells the story in short: what the space did for culture, for local and displaced people and for the army, and the results – 15+ events, 30+ artists and performers, 500+ guests and more than 30,000 hryvnias raised for the army. Below are all eleven events, most with the amount they raised, a short video about the space and answers to common questions.

Each event has its own page with the format, who was on stage, the venue, the story of the evening, what guests said and a photo report. Photos open in a full-screen viewer that also works with the keyboard. There is a page about the team – Pavlo Osikov, Denys Chyhirov and Svitlana Ostapchuk – with their goals, what was done in the shelter and press mentions, and a gallery of the shelter with notes guests left on the wall. The whole site is in Ukrainian and English.

What we did

We built the website and took care of its SEO. All 30 pages, in Ukrainian and English, have their own title and description, each page has one main heading and a clear structure, and every photo has a description, so search engines understand what each page is about. Every page also links to its version in the other language.

Under the hood

Plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with no frameworks. Each page has its critical styles built in, chosen by a small build script that checks the first screen of every page type in a real browser at 17 screen sizes. Photos are in WebP in several sizes, the fonts are self-hosted, and the YouTube video loads from youtube-nocookie.com only when someone presses play.
